"Wonderful Dancer Series" of this article is Jennifer Huang
Hello,
I am Jennifer. My dance journey consists of progress and failure. My self-esteem is boosted from dance. First, I did ballet for two years. I started when I was six years old. Later, I quit ballet and discovered Chinese dance. I have been doing Chinese dance for approximately six years with Yoyo School of Dancing. The beginning was difficult as I was not very flexible and/or strong yet, so I practiced diligently. Gradually, I improved. Improving also meant learning new techniques that made my body ache and I soon wanted to quit. My mom told me I should wait it out first before making a final decision. I am glad she did. Eventually, dance became a passion and a source of enjoyment. Improvement was showing again. My teachers, Teacher Ella(Tongtong) and Teacher Yoyo(Jiaying) are the two Chinese dance teachers I am grateful towards because of their immense support, kindness, and guidance. Something I am proud of during my dance journey is being able to perform an aerial. During the summer I achieved the side aerial. Although I could barely land at first, just by not touching the floor made me ecstatic. My success lasted for a week. The week after, my ankles felt numb and I had a mental block. I took a break, believed in myself, and then practiced multiple times. Months later, my aerial was stage-ready. I learned that you sometimes just need to go for it and trust yourself even in fear. I am still a part-time dancer at Yoyo School of Dancing and I do not think I will ever become full-time, but dance will always be a part of me. I hope I will be dancing even when I am a middle-aged woman.
Ella(Tongtong): I’ve been teaching Jennifer for 5 years. She hasn’t relaxed and given up herself, she always focused and does her best in each class during the past five years. I am so lucky that I have been teaching her for a while. I hope Jennifer could achieve more awards in the dance competitions and enjoy dance in her life forever.
